‘Tis the season to go back to school! Once again, kids are piling into yellow school buses; an estimated 26 million children in the US are transported via school bus each day.

But, wait! Why are school buses yellow? In 1939, a leader in education administration and school transportation, Dr. Frank W. Cyr, organized a conference that sought to standardize school transportation for improved safety. Engineers from the automotive industry, paint experts and transportation administrators determined that yellow – later dubbed “National School Bus Glossy Yellow” – with black lettering was the easiest to see in the light of early morning and afternoon. While many standards have been innovated and improved, that recognizable yellow remains.

This month’s mind boggler celebrates an icon of education: the yellow school bus.

Can you solve it?
