bb7 is looking for a Director of Engineering to work with one of our product development clients in the consumer products industry. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for three departments: Design Engineering, Packaging Engineering, and Product Documentation. He or she is responsible for ensuring each department meets or exceeds established safety, quality, housekeeping, and productivity standards. These departments run twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the product engineering department.
    • Ensure department takes the original product proposal, evaluates the feasibility of the product, proposes different design solutions, and implements the final design. 
    • Ensure designs meet the established manufacturing method, material cost, and function criteria.
  • Improve product development process while continuing to release a high volume of new products to the market. Specific improvement areas include:
    • Streamline the process. Reduce delays in product development due to design changes.
    • Improve designs to minimize tooling overruns.
    • Reduce product modifications after molds have been sampled.
    • Oversee the building of prototype models for new and modified products.
    • Ensure prototypes or models are aesthetically and functionally correct, based on information supplied by engineering and marketing departments.
  • Lead weekly new products meetings attended by production, engineering, tooling, purchasing, and others. Ensure all departments remain informed of important developments and due dates associated with new product development.
  • Attend management new product meetings.
  • Attend the Vice President’s staff meetings.
  • Lead staff meetings for employees within assigned responsibilities.
  • Coordinate the development of new products through direction and information given by sales and marketing departments.
  • Prioritize and direct the activities of design engineers to meet the demands set by sales and marketing departments.
  • Prioritize and direct activities of the design engineering model shop to meet demands set by all departments.
  • Recommend and direct the purchase of outside services for design engineering and prototype models.
  • Set product schedules for each phase of design engineering.
  • Review the designs of all design engineers to ensure they are:
    • Able to be manufactured
    • Cost effective
    • Compliant with the requirements of sales and marketing
    • Of the highest quality within cost constraints
    • On time
    • Meet all safety regulations.
  • Review product liability issues for new and existing products. Ensure products meet all existing governmental or industry standards for the intended applications.
  • Review patent issues for all products. Ensure proposed designs do not infringe on existing patents.
  • Ensure new designs are properly protected by patents in a timely basis.
  • Notify management if our existing patents appear to be violated by competitors.
    • Patent searches and applications may be performed by an outside law firm or contractor.
  • Set specifications for all components and products. Specification will be used by production, quality assurance purchasing, and suppliers.
  • Assist with review of all new mold designs prior to construction.
  • Recommend and direct the purchase of new equipment for design engineering and the model shop.
  • Set staffing levels for each department to meet company demands.
  • Ensure each department complies with OSHA and our safety policies.
  • Ensure each department complies with our housekeeping standards.
  • Seek methods to reduce costs within all departments.
  • Work with other departments to ensure company wide goals are met.
  • Ensure each department employee receives all required training in a timely basis.
  • Work with employees to prepare them for additional responsibility within the company. Identify high potential employees.
    • Work with the organizational development department and with human resources to develop a plan to increase their contribution.
  • Stay informed of new technology, methods, and materials within the field.
  • Explain company policies to workers and enforce safety regulations.
  • Confer with the director of organizational development on staffing, hiring, and disciplining employees.
  • Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Assist workers in resolving work related problems.
  • Prepare annual budget and ensure compliance to that budget. Track expenditures monthly.
  • Maintain employee time and production records.
  • Prepare required annual personnel performance reviews in a timely basis.
  • This position has supervisory responsibility for Design Engineers, Packaging Engineers, Product Documentation, outside contractors, and others as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering plus ten years of design experience with injection and blow molded consumer products required. Graduate coursework in management is desired.
  • Ability to effectively respond to questions from managers, engineers, coworkers, and subordinates. Ability to write reports and memos for coworkers and upper management.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • This position requires a high degree of computer literacy. A strong ability to understand three dimensional CAD methods and solid modeling methods. Experience in SolidWorks is a strong plus. Thorough familiarity with spreadsheets. Ability to use features such as complex formulas and graphing. Ability to understand file management methods and a basic understanding of word processing is required. AS400 experience is a plus.
